True Detective is written by Nic Pizzolatto and directed by Cary Fukunaga. It centers on two detectives, Rust Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) and Martin Hart (Woody Harrelson), whose lives collide and entwine during a seventeen-year hunt for a serial killer in Louisiana. The investigation of a bizarre murder in 1995 is framed and interlaced with testimony from the detectives in 2012, when the case has been reopened.

I love crime dramas, and this one did not disappoint me. It is shown mostly in flashbacks, as the two detectives, Rust Cohle and Martin Hart, are each giving the current detectives on the case, their versions of what happened during the investigation in 1995. These two detectives could not be more different. Rust Cohle is a former undercover narcotics detective. He is very dark and pessimistic, and prefers to be alone. Martin Hart is a married, father of 2 children. His marriage is starting to crumble under the strain of his job and infidelities. The first episode, The Long Bright Dark, introduces the viewers to the detectives and the murder. Each detective is being interviewed in 2012 about the murder of Dora Lange in 1995. The show is basically driven by these interviews. Dora Lange, a prostitute, was heinously murdered in 1995. She was murdered and then posed in a strange way, giving the hints of occult activity. These two detectives do not really get along well here, but they do try to be professional about things. In the second episode, the detectives are desperate to find a suspect, as a task force has been created and they want to take the case away from these two. They beg their boss, Major Quesada, for more time, telling him they have more leads. He gives them more time, but tells them that they need to get on the right track or they will have to give the case up. In this episode, Cohle opens up a bit about his past, and Hart is having an affair.

I find the show to be well-acted by these two well known actors. The supportive cast is also good and believable in these episodes. Rust Cohle is very dark and pessimistic, but he makes you want to know why he is like this. I believe that in time, these questions will be answered as well. Martin Hart is shown at the beginning to be somewhat likeable, but it does appear that he is not a faithful husband and appears to be a control freak. I like the direction of the show, and I am hooked on it now! It is a drama, so if you are looking for an action type show, this is not it. But if you like crime dramas, try it. It does not wrap everything up in a box with a pretty bow. This murder is the central theme of the entire season, so don’t expect it to be like Law & Order where one episode covers the entire case. But so far, it has left me wanting more.
